Trade Paperback. The Secret Cousin (Chad Lucas) -- In a Flash (Marty Chan) -- Where the Mulberries Grow (Liselle Sambury) -- Home Fires (Michael Hutchinson) -- The Memory Fish (Rosena Fung) -- A Feathered Sakr (Danny Ramadan) -- The Invention of Serene Brown (Jael Richardson) -- The Tomb (Mahtah Narsimhan) -- Be Careful What You Wish For (Angela Misri) -- Yesterday I Was, Today I Am, Tomorrow I Will Be (Brandon Wint). Ten stories of belonging from ten outstanding BIPOC authors from across Canada. In this collection of short fiction, ten outstanding authors explore the theme of home ― home as a place, a concept, as a way of thinking about the body ― through prose, verse and graphic storytelling. In “In a Flash” by Marty Chan, three kids come across a camera that traps the people it photographs. But can they figure out how to get out? When a lady from church comes to visit bringing “gifts,” Hunter sees his home on the rez in a new light in “Home Fires” by Michael Hutchinson. In “The Secret Cousin” by Chad Lucas, Lonnie is spending Thanksgiving with his mother’s family, who he hardly knows. Lonnie navigates the tension and discomfort of being one of two Black people in the house. But he finds new friendship in his cousin Ethan. These stories and more, compiled and edited by Jael Richardson, acclaimed author and Executive Director of the Festival of Literary Diversity, bring together perspectives on belonging from BIPOC authors from across the country.

Kirkus Review. It's Nimra Sharif's first time going to public school. Nimra's nervous, but as long as she has her best friend, Jenna, by her side, she figures she can take on just about anything. Unfortunately, middle school is hard. The teachers are mean, the schedule is confusing, and Jenna starts giving hijab-wearing Nimra the cold shoulder aorund the other kids. Desperate to fit in and save her friendship with Jenna, Nimra accepts an unlikely invitation to join Barakah Beats, a band made up of popular eighth-grade boys. The only problem is, Nimra was taught that music isn't allowed in Islam, and she knows her parents would be disappointed in her. So she devises a plan: join the band just until she wins Jenna back, then quit before her parents find out. But Nimra's lies quickly start to unravel. And as she grows to care about her bandmates, Nimra has to decide whether to betray her new friends or herself.

Rich with history and hilarious aunties and uncles, it's the place to find a great story--one she hopes to publish while attending journalism camp at the Tribune. But this trip has as many bumps as the hills of San Francisco... 1. Mia's camp is full of older kids, with famous relatives, fancy laptops, and major connections! Can she compete with just her pen and passion? 2. Lupe's thinking about skipping ahead to college! Will Mia ever get a chance to just chill with her best friend? 3. Jason's crushing hard on a new girl. For the first time ever, Mia is speechless...and jealous. Can she find the courage to tell Jason--gulp--that she has a crush on him? Even for the best writers, it's not always easy to find the right words. But if anyone can tell a top story, it's Mia Tang!"--Provided by publisher.

The Women's World Cup is coming to Southern California, and everyone is soccer-crazy -- especially Mia Tang! The U.S. is playing China in the finals, and Mia feels like her two identities are finally coming together. Less exciting, though? The fact that her P.E. teacher wants Mia to get out of the soccer field, too -- or fall short of the grade she needs to earn a spot at journalism camp. But as always, Mia Tang is ready with a plan: she'll track down the two women's teams, interview them, and write an A-grade article for P.E. instead! It's not so easy, though, finding professional athletes in Pasadena -- or bringing two identities together, even during a game. As Mia aims for her goals, she'll have to face prejudice, discrimination, and her own fears. But if anyone can find a way to win, it's Mia Tang!

Kirkus Starred. The first treaty that was made was between the earth and the sky. It was an agreement to work together. We build all of our treaties on that original treaty. On the banks of the river that have been Mishomis's home his whole life, he teaches his granddaughter to listen--to hear both the sounds and the silences, and so to learn her place in Creation. Most importantly, he teaches her about treaties--the bonds of reciprocity and renewal that endure for as long as the sun shines, the grass grows, and the rivers flow. Accompanied by beautiful illustrations by Luke Swinson and an author's note at the end, Aimée Craft affirms the importance of understanding an Indigenous perspective on treaties in this evocative book that is essential for readers of all ages.

"Born in 1907, Joseph-Armand grew up in a Valcourt, a small village in Quebec. Like many village places in rural and Northern Canada, Valcourt was often cut off from the world in the winter after snow made the roads impassable. Even when he was a kid, Armand was interested in inventing a vehicle that could drive through snow. As an adult, the passion to invent a snow machine became a serious ambition after his two-year-old son died from appendicitis. It was winter and they could not get him to the hospital. Armand persisted even after many failures, until he finally accomplished his goal. His B7 snow machine was used to deliver milk and mail . . . and it saved lives. But Armand didn't stop there! He continued to invent and innovate his whole life, developing machines like the Muskeg tractor and the famous Ski-doo, which revolutionized the way people live and work"--OCLC.

Terry's remarkable story is presented in Scholastic's acclaimed biography series, just in time to mark the 40th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope. Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and raised in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. Like most kids, he loved sports - baseball, track and field, volleyball. Terry was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with bone cancer and had to have his right leg amputated above the knee. During his hospital stay he was profoundly affected by the experiences of other young cancer patients. So he decided to do something about it. He decided to run across Canada to raise money and awareness for cancer research. He trained hard for his "Marathon of Hope" and on April 12, 1980 he began, dipping his artificial leg in the waters off St. John's Newfoundland. Terry's plan was to run all the way across the country. As Terry pounded the miles, more and more people took note, cheering the young hero on - and donating to his cause. The Marathon of Hope captured the attention and the hearts of Canadians, and people all over the world. 5753 kilometers into his run, Terry had to stop. The cancer had spread to his lungs, and he passed away the following year. Canadians were devastated at the loss of the heroic young man. But Terry's inspiring legacy was just beginning.

"Growing up in Winnipeg, Clara liked sports, but she wasn't a top athlete. Getting outside to play was a good escape from some of the turmoil and sadness at home. But as she got older, she picked other ways -- ways that were not good for her, until the fateful day she watched speed skater Gaétan Boucher compete at the 1988 Winter Games. Clara decided she would do that too. It was a life-changing decision. Clara quickly learned to speed skate and began competing. Part of her training included cycling and it turned out she was great at that too. She switched to cycling and worked very hard - maybe too hard. Even though she won multiple Olympic medals in cycling, but winning didn't make her feel good. She felt sadder than ever. Clara realized that all the medals in the world would not make her okay. She had to work as hard on her mental health as she did on her training. Maybe even harder. Clara decided it would be good for her to take a break from cycling. She returned speed skating and won medals in that, too! This time it felt better in the spotlight, which she decided to use to help children - especially girls - around the world have better access to sport. Clara then used her fame to talk about how important mental health was, and that it was normal to not feel okay -- and especially okay to talk about it! She went on to lend her voice in support of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, becoming an Honorary Witness and helping to spread their message. Clara is still the only person in the world to ever win multiple medals at both the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics. But perhaps her biggest win is the work she has done to help others."-- Provided by publisher.
